This is a photo of the U.S. Navy's airship Macon docked at the mast at Naval Air Station Opa Locka.
The caption of this International News Photo dated 5-7-34 states: "Her Brood Salutes Her. Miami, Fla ... A squadron of marine planes dips in salute on passing the navy's great dirigible "Macon" at Miami, Florida. The planes, dirigible and 110 of Uncle Sam's sea fighters are arrayed against each other in the secret war games in the Caribbean."
The USS Macon was 785 feet long and 155 feet high across the fins. She was approximately the same size as the aircraft carrier Enterprise which was 824 feet long and 109 feet wide. Macon was built as an aircraft carrier and had a complement of five fighter planes.
Macon had flown non-stop from her home, NAS Moffett Field in Sunnyvale California, to NAS Opa-Locka arriving on 22 April '34. On the day of this photo, 05 May '34, she flew south and joined the Blue force which included the aircraft carrier Saratoga off Jamaica. They battled with Lexington in the Grey force. Macon is "shot down" but one of her fighter pilots gets off a position report that enables Saratoga to "sink" the Lexington. On 07 May Macon returns to Opa-Locka and has an engine replaced. On 11 May '34 she rejoins the fleet off Puerto Rico and then returns to Opa-Locka on 13 May. On 16 May '34 Macon casts off and travels back to California. During this time Rear Admiral King visits Opa-Locka on 14 May.
