This copy is a first printing of the first edition and is VeryGood plus in a VeryGood dust jacket. The dust jacket is somewhat worn on the edges and missing small chips at the top and and bottom of the spine. The dust jacket spine is a bit faded. There is a repaired tear on page 140 of the book. This is one of the copies of the first printing where the publisher tipped in a limitation leaf making this the FLORIDA EDITION, signed by the author and numbered, as a limited edition. The limitation is unknown but estimated to be 1000 copies. (A0-0089). $430.00 Marjory Stoneman Douglas (1890-1998) had several careers in her lifetime: reporter for the Miami Herald, publicist for the Coral Gables Corporation, free-lance writer for the Saturday Evening Post and other magazines; but with the publication in 1947 of this book she became known as a historian, naturalist, and environmentalist. In 1993 she was awarded the Medal of Freedom, the nation's highest civilian honor - citing her environmental work and this book, the Everglades: River of Grass. |
The Everglades: River of Grass had an original print run of 7500 copies (including
the limited copies) and was published on November 6, 1947. It sold out by Christmas 1947 and a
second printing of 5000 copies was quickly produced. There have been over thirty printings in
over five editions in the last fifty years. The book is currently in print both as a paperback and a hardback.
Robert Fink, the illustrator, was the son of Denman Fink, a noted architect, artist, illustrator and a partner with George Merrick in the Coral Gables Corporation. Robert undoubtably met Marjory Stoneman Douglas when they both worked in the corporation's publicity department during the boom in the 1920s. A note on condition. For some reason unknown to us, first printing dust jackets in superior condition are rare. This item, in VG+/VG condition, is the best copy available in the United States at this time. |
