Works Philip Wylie
A Collection of the Works of Philip Wylie

This is a collection of twenty-seven volumes of works written by Philip Wylie.  They have all been rebound in uniform red cloth with leather labels on the spine.   Item #5 is inscribed by Wylie to his father; item #16 is inscribed by Wylie's publisher and friend, John Farrar, to Wylie's father.  Both items are also inscribed by the father, E. M. Wylie.   A unique collection.   Individually priced.  See below.

This collection was bought from a dealer who was unable to provide any providence for the books.   The two inscriptions lead me to speculate that Wylie had his publisher make up this collection as a gift for his father.   Wylie's father died in 1957.   This is not a complete collection. Between the dates of the books here, 1928 to 1954, Wylie wrote another seven books that are not present including Gladiator in 1930 and Selected Short Stories in 1945. These seven were scarce books even in 1954.

Each book has been trimmed about a quarter of an inch on all three edges before being rebound. All of the books have new endpages. The interiors of all the books are about fine and appear to have never been read except where noted below. The exteriors of several of the books show uneven fading on the covers. The spines of some have faded.   Item #18 is an ex-library copy from a library that no longer exists.    All of these books were published in New York. All of them are first editions, except where noted below. They are listed in order of original publication.

Wylie was Miami's preeminent author in the middle third of the Twentieth Century.   Two of his novels were set in Miami.   His short stories about a charter boat captain and his mate appearing in the Saturday Evening Post from 1939 to 1956 established Miami in the public imagination as the deep sea fishing capital of the world.
